Production builder does more with significantly less effort

The search for new software was complicated by the fact that Atlanta-based MDC Homes doesn't run its business off a production schedule, like most software makers assume, says Hilda Prince, MDC cost control manager. "So many of the software packages are running off the production calendar, which we didn't want to do. We print out all of our purchase orders at the beginning of a job and lock in our prices at that point," Prince says.

But after doing a lot of research, MDC found a software package flexible enough to work according to their system. The builder has been a Sage Timberline Office client since 2000.

Integration means no dual entry of data
MDC appreciates how integrated Sage Timberline Office is as an entire system. With Production Management, for instance, MDC is able to enter data once and have it automatically posted in multiple places, Prince says.

Production Management also made it possible for MDC to stop keeping separate databases for each of its 50 subdivisions, saving the company a great deal of work. "Instead of maintaining separate databases, we just maintain one. When we input prices, we just have to input them once instead of 50 times," Prince says.

With its old software, MDC had a lot of work to do every time it found a takeoff error — Prince would have to go into each individual database and correct the takeoff. "Now I can fix the takeoff one time, and it's fixed for every subdivision," she says.

Margin control
Prince says Sage Timberline Office makes it possible for her company to keep a stronger rein on margin control.

"Now I can control margins on individual options as well as base houses, where before I had to do it as one lump sum," Prince says.

Strong recommendation
Prince is so happy with her company's experience with Sage Timberline Office's Production Management that she doesn't hesitate to recommend the software to other companies.

"Yesterday, I spoke to a company from California and I told him that looking back, I would definitely make the same decision I made three years ago when I pointed the company in this direction. I'm very, very pleased with the software," Prince says.
