In early 1998, Paul V. Profeta & Associates knew its software system was too antiquated to be upgraded for Y2K compliance, so the West Orange, N.J.-based property management firm began urgently shopping for a solution.
The company, founded in 1976 by Paul Profeta, owns and manages 30 properties ranging from medical office buildings and commercial properties to residential units, industrial complexes and shopping centers in Colorado, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Utah.
Analyze vast amounts fast
Profeta wanted a system that could analyze a vast amount of information quickly and efficiently. The system also had to maintain an extensive historical database containing the property, lease and financial details needed to forecast future performance and opportunities for growth.
Most importantly, the new system would also have to be flexible enough to adapt to Profeta & Associate's own particular business conventions, including the ability to generate intricate, customized reports.
Chief Financial Officer Steve Coleman researched available systems, interviewing vendors and consulting colleagues and friends in the industry. Timberline quickly stood out. "Compared with other companies that we were looking at, we learn from Timberline. It's reassuring that they seem to lead the way. They're way ahead of the curve in updating their software."
Long-time dependability fosters long-term certainty
Profeta & Assoc. had Timberline accounting software up and running in time for its self-imposed September 1998 deadline, and sailed through Y2K without any millennium bug problems.
Coleman says that after nearly four years with Timberline, it's clear the firm didn't make a mistake in its choice.
"Timberline has made my job much easier," Coleman says. "We run a very lean shop here, and Timberline has made it possible for us to successfully run Profeta with a skeleton crew. Using Timberline, I can enter hundreds of receipts and bills, as well as pay vendors quickly and easily. We are very pleased with the software."
