Specialist CDI gets flexibility and report detail to impact bottom line

Pioneers in the field of explosives demolition, Controlled Demolition Inc. (CDI), knows the importance of job control and paying attention to details.

When it came to accounting, CDI needed software that would help it monitor each job's financial performance so when the dust settles, the company's bottom line is intact and profitable.

Unlimited detail
Mark and Doug Loizeaux, sons of Jack Loizeaux, who founded the implosion industry in the 1940s in his tree removal service, head up CDI's international headquarters in Phoenix, Md. They expect the same level of accuracy and job control from their accounting software as they do from the precision of their implosion techniques.

They found that precision in Sage Timberline Office.

"Sage Timberline Office enables us to capture unlimited detail," says Mark Loizeaux, CDI's president, noting he depends on that up-to-date information to back up his management decisions.

One-time data entry
Sheila Werren, CDI's accounting manager, says the integration among Sage Timberline Office's different modules makes it easy to run a report by the job, rather than having to combine reports from the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Job Cost modules.

"We always know if we're financially okay on a project, she says. "And the option to look at the information with unlimited detail or as a one-line summary is great."

That integration means information only has to be entered once, and it also reduces the chance for data-entry mistakes and provides appropriate accounting trails.

"Not only does it take 30% less time to enter information, we're always up to date," Werren says.

Flexibility to fit the specialty
Werren's favorite time savers include the ability to export Sage Timberline Office reports and data in Excel and Access as well as the ability to save reports in a format that can be emailed.

Sage Timberline Office's flexibility for customization is what makes the difference for CDI, Werren says. "We're somewhat different from typical construction companies because we don't build anything," she says. "Sage Timberline Office job costing was flexible enough to allow us to set up our own kind of cost tracking."
